You must be a Missouri resident, be able to go into an onsite class to take assessment tests, and have internet access (not an internet-ready device such as WebTV).
Although GED Online does not require you to be a computer expert, the class is ideally for people who have some computer experience. You should be able to search and browse the Internet comfortably.
GED Online uses the Blackboard classroom platform. In order to run Blackboard, you just need a current web browser. We also use two other curriculum programs, Skills Tutor and Tutorsystems, that may require you to download some software to your computer.
Since we are funded completely through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), there is no cost to enroll. However, you do have to be a Missouri resident.

Our funding from DESE is based on the progress that our students make on their assessment tests. In order for the assessment tests to be valid, they must be proctored by an instructor, which means you must go to an onsite class to take them.
After you take the assessment tests in the onsite class, you or your instructor will mail/email/fax your scores to your GED Online instructor. When those scores are received, you will be given assignments in the GED Online classroom. When you complete those assignments, you may be asked to go back to the onsite class to take a post-test.
Yes, your username and password will only be assigned to you after you have submitted your assessment test scores.
The length of time it takes you to prepare depends upon how often you check into class, how much effort you put into your work, and at what level you need to start.
Both your online and onsite instructor will track your progress through your assessment test scores, assignments, and quizzes. They will let you know when they think you are ready for the test.
No, you can't actually take the GED online; you still have to go to your local testing center to take it. For Missouri residents, the procedure is as follows.
- Get a GED application from the DESE website or your onsite class.
- Mail your completed application, along with a money order for the amount of the processing fee, to the GED office in Jefferson City.
- Wait for your approved application to be mailed back to you.
- Go to your onsite class to fill out a demographic form.
- Call your local testing center to find out how to sign up for a test.
